From Creepy to Captivating: How MTYC’s “The Addams Family” Showcased the Power of Youth Theatre
29 July 2026Every spring, the Musical Theatre Youth Company (MTYC) brings together talented and enthusiastic young performers from across Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire for an unforgettable theatre experience. This year, audiences were treated to The Addams Family. From the first rehearsal to the final curtain call, the project demonstrated exactly why MTYC is such an important opportunity for young people passionate about musical theatre.
More Than a Show
While audiences were wowed with thrilling dance routines, haunting harmonies, and larger-than-life characters, what they didn’t see was everything that happened before opening night.
They didn’t see the nervous child arriving at the first workshop not knowing anyone.
They didn’t see the cast members helping each other learn choreography, running lines in their breaks, or forming friendships with people who were strangers just weeks ago.
They certainly didn’t see (and wouldn’t have guessed based on the performances) the confidence that, with the right nurturing, grew little by little in each rehearsal.
While MTYC is, of course, about putting on a great show, it’s never just about the show.
Finding Your People
One of the most wonderful things about theatre is its ability to bring together people who may never have met, uniting them with a common love.
This is absolutely true of MTYC for the young performers in the region.
For many students, school can feel like their entire world, and their routines and activities can often revolve around the same group of friends. MTYC offers something different; people from different schools, different friendship groups, different cultures.
But they all arrive with one thing in common: a love of performing.
For young people, finding others who share their interests can be incredibly important and often forms the basis of their strongest bonds. Suddenly, they’re surrounded by others who love to sing, dance, act, and use their creativity.
And there’s something magical about watching those connections grow. Those who arrive nervous quickly realise they’re surrounded by like minds, conversations begin naturally, and friendships form quickly. One of the things we hear most often from participants after the project finishes isn’t about the performances, but the people they’ve met along the way.
Confidence Without Pressure
Parents often ask whether MTYC is suitable for children who aren’t naturally confident.
Confidence isn’t something we expect all young performers to bring with them, it’s something we hope to help them develop along the way.
Not everyone wants to take centre stage on day one, and that’s okay. Some young people are outgoing from the moment they arrive, while others take longer to find their feet. That’s natural!
What makes theatre so unique and special is the way confidence grows, almost accidentally, alongside you pursuing your passion.
It grows when a performer masters a dance step they were finding tricky, or a harmony that wasn’t going in. It grows when they contribute an idea in rehearsal. It might even grow when they simply realise they’ve spent a 2-hour rehearsal laughing with someone they didn’t know at the start of the process.
By the time the performances arrive, lots of the cast have already achieved things they didn’t know they could. The greatest reward for you, as parents, might not necessarily be what happens on stage. It might be seeing them believing in themselves a little bit more than when they started.
A Space to Be Creative
Modern life is busy, structured, and increasingly dominated by screens – even for children!
MTYC gives young performers something that’s surprisingly rare: the chance to be creative.
Rehearsals are full of storytelling, imagination, problem-solving, and collaboration. The cast are encouraged to play, explore their characters, and make creative choices. They’re not simply memorising lines and choreography, they’re discovering how to work as a team to create something which they, as an individual, are integral.
Learning Responsibility
As rehearsals progress, these youngsters do something remarkable…
They take ownership of the production. They learn that showing up, being prepared, and supporting one another really matters. They discover that theatre is the ultimate team sport; nobody succeeds alone.
The friendships become stronger. The confidence grows. The cast starts to feel like a family.
Of course, there are challenges; moments when choreography feels impossible, harmonies don’t seem to fit, and everyone is tired at the end of a long day. Yet in those moments, the growth takes place.
When young people overcome challenges together, they gain far more than just performance experience. They learn resilience, commitment, and the satisfaction that comes from working towards and achieving a shared goal.
Looking Ahead
We’re incredibly proud of everything our company achieved with The Addams Family. The performances were outstanding, but what happened behind the scenes was even more exciting.
Every year, MTYC gives young people the chance to step away from their normal routines, meet new people, and challenge themselves creatively.
As we begin looking forward to next year’s show, we’re excited to welcoming returning performers and new faces to make more incredible memories.
While the title of the show changes every year, the most important part stays the same. It’s all about giving young performers a place to belong, the confidence to grow, and memories that last long after the curtain falls.
