Things Nobody Tells You About Starting an Adult Class

So, you’ve decided the time has come to do something for yourself.

Something fun. Something sociable. Something that isn’t work, answering emails, cleaning the house or remembering what everyone needs for tomorrow.

Excellent decision.

Then you come to the sudden realisation that it actually requires getting through the door.

“What if everyone else is an extremely talented ex-professional? What if I look ridiculous? Most importantly… what do I wear?!”

Don’t panic. We’ve got you.

Whether you’re thinking about giving adult ballet a go or fancy finding your confidence through singing, starting something new can feel daunting. We’ve put together this handy guide to dispel some of those worries, so you can focus on your new hobby.

Nobody Tells You That Everyone is Nervous

Even the people who look like they know exactly what they’re doing.

Walking into a new class can be intimidating, particularly if you haven’t danced or sung in years (or ever!). You might be convinced that everyone’s been doing it since they were three and you’re the only one who forgets your left and right under pressure.

The good news?

Nobody expects you to be perfect.

Our adult classes are about learning, having a go, and enjoying yourself in a judgement-free zone. You don’t have to arrive knowing what a plié is or belting out notes worthy of a West End stage.

That’s what the classes are for.

Nobody Tells You That You Don’t Need To Be ‘a Dancer’

You actually don’t need any dance background at all to try our adult ballet.

You don’t need to be able to wrap your leg behind your head or have hamstrings made of chewing gum. You don’t even need to be able to touch your toes.

And you definitely don’t need to own a mysterious collection of ballet shoes, leg warmers and leotards (though if you’ve had these sequestered away in your wardrobe since some time in the 1980s, we won’t judge you for wanting to put them to good use). But seriously, leggings and a t-shirt is fine.

Adult ballet classes are a brilliant way to improve your strength, coordination, posture and mobility while learning something new.

If you’ve been searching for mixed-ability adult dance classes wondering whether you’re ‘too old’, ‘too inexperienced’, or ‘too anxious’, we’re here to assure you that you really can start from wherever you are.

Yes, you might wobble. Everyone wobbles. It’s part of the experience, really.

Nobody Tells You That Singing is Surprisingly Good For Your Confidence

Singing can feel even more exposing than dancing. In a dance class, you can convince yourself that no one’s noticed what you get up to at the back of the room. Sound travels, however, so you’re probably adamant that everyone is hyper-focused on whether you’re hitting a bum note.

But guess what? Everyone’s as focused on their own vulnerability as much as you are yours.

Adult singing classes give you the chance to develop your voice, breathing, musicality and confidence in a supportive environment. You’ll learn to use your voice in the way that suits you and become comfortable being heard.

And there’s something incredibly liberating about standing in a room and just singing.

You don’t need to be auditioning for Les Misérables or have a Mariah Carey-style six octave range, you just have to enjoy singing.

Although, if you do have a secret Beyoncé hiding inside you, we’d love to meet her.

Nobody Tells You That You Might Actually Make Proper Friends

One of the best things about adult dance and singing classes is that you’re all there for the same reason; you’ve chosen to spend an hour doing something you enjoy.

You’ll meet people you’d not have otherwise met, have a laugh, learn together and perhaps occasionally share the universal experience of looking at the teacher with an expression that says “I understood about 50% of what you just said”.

Whether you’re coming along to adult ballet classes or trying your hand at singing, you’re likely to find the social aspect to be just as important as the class itself.

Nobody Tells You That Your Brain Will Love It

Learning new things is good for you!

Learning choreography means remembering steps. Learning harmonies calls for listening, coordinating your voice and concentrating on your breathing. Learning ballet requires focus, musicality and synchronisation.

For an hour, you have to be present.

That means your brain gets a break from the endless to-do list and adult worries that occupied your brain before you entered the studio.

You can’t think about your emails while trying to remember which way you’re meant to turn.

Well, you can. But you probably won’t turn the right way.

Nobody Tells You How Much Better You’ll Feel Afterwards

You’ll leave with the satisfaction of having done something for yourself.

Not because you had to. Not because someone else told you to. Not because it was on your to-do list. Just because you wanted to.

And really, adults deserve more of that.

Plus, we all know the benefits of physical activity and giving your brain a challenge, so we won’t harp on about that.

Nobody Tells You That You Don’t Have To Be Good at Something To Enjoy It

This might be the biggest one.

Somewhere between childhood and adulthood we seem to have developed this strange idea that we’re only allowed to do things we know we’re good at.

Coordination not your thing? Dance isn’t for you.

Not flexible? Give ballet a miss.

Can’t sing? Better not.

And if you’re not immediately brilliant at something, why put yourself through the embarrassment of doing it?

But when did we decide that everything we do has to be productive, impressive or worth showing off?

You’re allowed to be a bit rubbish at something.

In fact, you’re allowed to be spectacularly rubbish at something.

You can forget the steps. You can sing a not in a key not yet discovered. You can spend an entire class wondering how everyone is on the left leg when you’re on the right.

And you can still have a brilliant time.

Children are generally much better at this than we are. They’ll spend an hour prancing around the living room with no regard for whether they look like a professional dancer. They’ll sing the loudest note they can muster with complete confidence, unconcerned by whether it was, technically speaking, in tune. Surely we’ve all been on the receiving end of a child saying ‘watch this!’ before performing a hybrid of a bunny hop and what you’d do if there was a wasp in your knickers, proudly declaring it a cartwheel.

Somewhere along the way, we start worrying about what other people think.

So perhaps it’s time to start embracing some of our childhood whimsy again. You don’t have to become a brilliant dancer to enjoy ballet. You don’t have to become a fantastic singer to enjoy singing. You don’t have to get good at it at all. What if you just do it because you love it?

Not everything we do needs to become a skill, a side hustle or an achievement to put on our CV.

You’re allowed to do things just because they make you smile. What is that old adage? Dance like no one’s watching?

So, What Are You Waiting For?

If you’ve always fancied trying ballet, love singing but have been shying away, or want to dust off an old hobby, our adult classes could be exactly what you’re looking for.

You don’t have to be fit.

You don’t have to be flexible.

You don’t have to be Susan Boyle.

You just have to give it a go.

Whether you’re looking for adult dance classes, adult singing lessons, or just fun things to do in Cambridgeshire, there’s no rules about when you can start.

Come through the door. We’ll take it from there.
