What is Musical Theatre Training?

Our Approach to Triple-Threat Skills

What actually IS Musical Theatre?

Musical Theatre is a blend of acting, singing, and dance. Performers have to seamlessly switch between spoken dialogue, song, and movement, often engaging all three skills simultaneously. Musical Theatre training is enjoyable and rewarding, but it requires teamwork, creativity, and commitment in order to get the most out of it.

Arts training holds an important place in contemporary education due to its ability to unlock confidence and communication skills in those that participate. It can also be beneficial for those who don’t thrive in traditional settings, as students are given the space and freedom to express themselves in an environment where differences are celebrated.

What Do We Mean By Triple-Threat Skills?

A triple-threat performer can act convincingly, sing confidently and dance with good technique and expression.

At Stageworks College, we place equal emphasis on all three disciplines in order to produce performers who are resilient, coordinated, and adaptable. By focusing on the theoretical knowledge that underpins the practical performance skills, our musical theatre students have an understanding of vocal and physical health, influential practitioners, and professional etiquette, preparing them perfectly for their next steps into the industry.

Performance Opportunities

Every year, we stage a number of productions in different forms that allow students to practice their skills in front of a live audience. The rehearsal processes for these shows give performers an opportunity to integrate their dance, singing, and acting training to develop characters, memorise material, and participate in professional-standard rehearsals.

This not only solidifies their Musical Theatre skills but also provides valuable ensemble experience, preparing them to become an excellent member of any team.

Throughout the year, our Musical Theatre cohort are involved in:

  • MTC (fully-staged musical)
  • BTEC Evening
  • Musicals in The Aisles
  • Grad Show

Plus local and seasonal opportunities that present themselves, such as singing in the St Neots market square or entertaining at the Christmas Light Switch On.

The Benefits

The advantages to an education in Musical Theatre extend far beyond the stage.

Our MT students develop transferable skills, such as:

  • Confidence and communication
  • Creative problem-solving
  • Strong work ethic
  • Teamwork and leadership
  • Physical, vocal, and mental wellbeing

This provides them with varied career opportunities, not limited to performing arts. Our students have progressed to careers in education, costume design, cabin crew, and even midwifery! As we often say; if you’re capable of standing on stage in front of a room full of people, there aren’t many things you can’t do!

Of course, many students have also continued to thrive within the performing arts since their time at Stageworks, with many on the West End, cruise liners, international tours, in feature films and beyond. Our student successes position us as a leading provider of professional performing arts education, supported by teachers who are working performers and a curriculum designed to help aspiring performers to shine.
